Filming in Rapid City
Gateway to the Black Hills, with tourism, healthcare, and defence. Landscape is an asset within twenty minutes of downtown.
The Black Hills rise straight out of the plains west of Rapid City in dark ponderosa over granite, and they give the region something the rest of the Dakotas cannot — real topography, and with it real shadow and dimension in the light.
More on filming in Rapid City
Downtown keeps a brick core with life-size bronze presidents standing on the corners. Custer State Park adds granite spires, open grassland and a free-ranging bison herd under a state-park process; Badlands National Park is an hour east and looks like nowhere else on earth; Spearfish Canyon runs limestone and waterfalls with the strongest autumn colour in the region ninety minutes northwest. The Hills make their own weather, and afternoon storms build fast over high ground. City locations run through Rapid City, while Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and the national forest each permit independently on longer federal and state timelines. One date governs the calendar here: the Sturgis rally reshapes lodging, traffic and access across the Hills for roughly two weeks in early August.
The Black Hills define the usable settings. Downtown’s brick core is marked by life-size bronze presidents on its corners, while the Hills rise immediately west in dark ponderosa forest over granite. Custer State Park adds open grassland, granite spires, and a free-ranging bison herd under a separate state-park process.
Late May through early October is the main window, with the first half of August as the major exception. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally brings several hundred thousand visitors to the Black Hills and transforms lodging, traffic, and access across the region for roughly two weeks. Summers are warm and dry, and fast afternoon thunderstorms form over the high ground. Clear western light gains real dimension from the Hills.
City locations run through Rapid City. Badlands National Park, Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, and the national forest all permit independently, with federal and state processes carrying longer lead times than the city. Rapid City itself is small and easy to move through, and Rapid City Regional Airport is about 20 minutes southeast. Badlands National Park is roughly an hour east. Spearfish Canyon is about an hour northwest. Mount Rushmore lies around 30 minutes southwest. Rapid City uses Mountain Time, unlike Sioux Falls and Aberdeen on Central Time.
As a video production company, we work across South Dakota, including Sioux Falls and Aberdeen. If your shoot spans more than one city, we plan it as a single production rather than separate trips.
