Filming in Grand Forks
University research and an unmanned-aircraft industry cluster. Technical facility films need a crew that can light interiors properly, which is most of the job.
Grand Forks offers technical access that exists almost nowhere else. The University of North Dakota runs the country's first collegiate aviation programme, with hangars, simulators and a working flight line, and Grand Sky operates a dedicated unmanned-aircraft business park beside the air force base.
More on filming in Grand Forks
Downtown and the Greenway show a city rebuilt after the 1997 flood, with a very wide engineered park now occupying the river corridor, and the Red River running north toward Canada — one of the few major rivers on the continent that does. At forty-eight degrees north the summer light runs late, still usable past nine in the evening in June. The City of Grand Forks governs municipal filming, while the defining facilities are federal or institutional: the air force base follows Department of Defense approval and the university controls its own property, both on substantial lead times. Fargo is an hour south, and Grand Forks International is ten minutes west.
Technical settings are concentrated. Grand Sky adds a dedicated unmanned-aircraft business park beside Grand Forks Air Force Base. Few markets can place technical facility work inside such a concentrated aviation and UAS environment. Downtown and the Greenway show how the city was rebuilt after the 1997 flood, with a broad engineered park occupying the river corridor.
Late May through September is the practical exterior season. At about 48°N, Grand Forks is the coldest of the three North Dakota markets, with long severe winters and short warm summers. The December solstice provides only about eight and a quarter hours of daylight, the shortest winter production day in the city group. Summer reverses that constraint, with useful light extending past 9 p.m. in late June.
The City of Grand Forks governs local filming. The defining facilities are institutional or federal rather than municipal: the Air Force base follows Department of Defense approval, and UND controls access to university property. Both carry substantial lead time. Roads and staging are otherwise simple, and Grand Forks International Airport is about ten minutes west. Fargo is about an hour south. Winnipeg is roughly two and a half hours north, but the international border introduces customs requirements for production equipment.
As a video production company, we work across North Dakota, including Fargo and Bismarck. If your shoot spans more than one city, we plan it as a single production rather than separate trips.
