Filming in Montpelier
State government and finance in the smallest capital in the country. Interview-led institutional work is the usual brief.
The Vermont State House is a gold-domed Greek Revival capitol backed immediately by a wooded hillside — small, and among the most photogenic state houses in the country. It stands in the smallest state capital in the United States, under ten thousand people, where the entire downtown can be covered on foot in about ten minutes.

A few blocks of nineteenth-century brick run along the Winooski, and Hubbard Park rises straight out of the middle of town with nearly two hundred acres of forest and a stone observation tower in it. Fifteen minutes southeast, the Barre granite quarries drop sheer grey walls hundreds of feet down — among the largest deep-hole dimension-stone quarries in the world, privately held and permissioned directly. Valley walls shorten the light at both ends of the day and hardwood canopy filters it heavily from May through October, with autumn colour among the strongest anywhere in the state. Vermont has no general state permit, though Montpelier maintains its own municipal approvals for public spaces.
The capital’s small scale defines the usable settings. Downtown runs only a few blocks along the Winooski River, preserving nineteenth-century brick at a scale that can be covered on foot. Hubbard Park rises directly from town with nearly 200 acres of forest and a stone observation tower. The Barre granite quarries are about 15 minutes southeast and rank among the world’s largest deep-hole dimension-stone quarries.
June through mid-October is the main exterior period. Montpelier is colder than Burlington without Lake Champlain’s moderating effect, with substantial winter snow, a short warm summer, and full mud season in April. Autumn color is among the strongest in Vermont. Valley walls shorten the light at both ends of the day, and hardwood canopy filters it heavily from May through October.
Vermont has no general state permit, but Montpelier maintains municipal approvals for public spaces. The State House is state property with its own permission, and the Barre quarries are privately controlled. Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the United States, with fewer than 10,000 residents. The entire downtown is walkable in about ten minutes. Burlington International Airport is roughly 45 minutes northwest. Stowe is roughly 35 minutes northwest. Burlington and Lake Champlain are about 45 minutes away.
As a video production company, we work across Vermont, including Burlington and Stowe. If your shoot spans more than one city, we plan it as a single production rather than separate trips.
