Filming in Billings
The state's largest city and its medical hub, serving a region bigger than most states. Healthcare recruitment films are the most common brief.
The Rimrocks define a Billings shoot — five hundred feet of sandstone running the length of the city, with the airport sitting on top of them, so the approach into town is already a shot. Below, the Yellowstone River brings cottonwood bottomland straight through the middle, and Montana Avenue keeps restored railroad-era warehouse frontage on the ground.
More on filming in Billings
This is high plains rather than mountain Montana: long sightlines, unobstructed sky, and at this latitude a June day running past fifteen hours with extended low light at both ends. Being east of the ranges also keeps it clearer than the western valleys in late summer. Municipal buildings, streets and parks run on city permission, and state land follows Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks commercial-use rules. Billings Logan International is ten minutes from downtown, Pictograph Cave's prehistoric rock art fifteen minutes southeast, and the Beartooth Highway climbs to nearly eleven thousand feet ninety minutes southwest when the season allows it.
Geography defines the usable settings. Montana Avenue adds restored railroad-era warehouses, while the Yellowstone River brings cottonwood bottomland through the city. Above both, the Rimrocks form a 500-foot sandstone edge running the city’s length and provide its defining backdrop.
June through September is the main exterior season. Billings is drier than western Montana, with cold snowy winters, hot dry summers, and short shoulder seasons that can change quickly. It is also less exposed to late-summer valley smoke than Missoula or Bozeman. The high plains produce long sightlines and unobstructed sky; at this latitude, June daylight lasts more than fifteen hours and extends the low-angle light at both ends of the day.
Municipal buildings, streets, and parks operate through city permission. State land follows Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks commercial-use rules. The city remains quick to cross, although the Rimrocks divide north-south movement. Billings Logan International sits on top of the Rimrocks about ten minutes from downtown. Pictograph Cave is about 15 minutes southeast. Pompeys Pillar is roughly 45 minutes northeast. Red Lodge and the Beartooth Highway are about 90 minutes southwest.
As a video production company, we work across Montana, including Bozeman and Missoula. If your shoot spans more than one city, we plan it as a single production rather than separate trips.
