Filming in Phoenix
The fifth-largest city in the country, with a corporate base — healthcare, finance, semiconductors — that has outgrown its local production supply. Most Phoenix shoots we scope are recruitment and brand films for employers hiring at speed.
A Phoenix shoot day gets built around the sun. Cloud cover is rare enough that a call sheet can be planned on light rather than hedged against it, and the golden hour at either end runs long and dependable. Desert sits fifteen minutes from downtown — Papago Park's red sandstone buttes, South Mountain looking back across the whole Valley, Roosevelt Row where the frontage finally reads as a district rather than a business park. Twenty minutes east, Old Town Scottsdale's low adobe gives Southwest that does not look like a set. Permits for city-managed locations and public right-of-way run through the City of Phoenix Film & Digital Media office on a single coordinated process, and Sky Harbor is four miles from the middle of it.
More on filming in Phoenix
What actually works on camera sits close to the work. Papago Park’s red sandstone buttes are fifteen minutes from downtown. South Mountain, one of the largest municipal parks in the country, looks back across the whole Valley. Roosevelt Row is the one stretch of downtown that reads as a district rather than a business park. Twenty minutes east, Old Town Scottsdale’s low adobe gives Southwest that does not look like a set. These places let a brand film or commercial carry real Arizona texture without adding travel days.
The light is unusually dependable. Cloud cover is rare enough that schedules can be built around the sun. Midday is hard on faces without control, so the usable window sits at either end of the day. October to April is the strong shooting season. Summer highs run past 100°F from May into September and past 110°F in June and July, with monsoon dust and short rain July through September; exterior work in those months is first light or last light. When a summer date is fixed, Flagstaff stays in the 80s two and a half hours north.
Logistically the Valley is straightforward for production. It is a grid built for cars, freeway movement between the cities is quick outside peak hours, and the streets are wide enough that truck staging is rarely the problem it becomes in older downtowns. Sky Harbor is four miles from downtown — one of the shortest airport-to-set runs of any major U.S. market. That combination keeps travel and staging costs lower than most cities of this size. Permits for city-managed locations and public right-of-way run through the City of Phoenix Film & Digital Media office on a one-stop process.
Arizona does not observe daylight saving, so from March to November Phoenix matches Pacific time rather than Mountain.
As a video production company, we work across Arizona, including Tucson, Flagstaff and Mesa. If your shoot spans more than one city, we plan it as a single production rather than separate trips.
